10 things Denmark is known for:

Hans Christian Anderson: A highly acclaimed and renowned children’s author of fairytales, who is also acknowledged for the many-facetted poet and writer he was. Hans Christian Andersen was born on 2nd April, 1805, and in the year 2005 we are celebrating his 200 years birthday.

The little Mermaid: The Little Mermaid was a present from brewer Carl Jacobsen (The Carlsberg Breweries) to Copenhagen, and was made by a little known sculptor called Edvard Erichsen. The little Mermaid was presented at Langelinje in 1913, as part of a general trend in Copenhagen in those days, which demanded classical and historic figures to be used as decoration in the city's parks and public areas.

Tivoli: The amusement park, Tivoli, is situated in the heart of Copenhagen. Since the opening in 1843, Tivoli has been visited by more than 270 million people. Here is everything a tourist may desire from a fairytale garden: 32 restaurants, 26 amusements, 400.000 flowers, 110.000 lamps, 150 concerts, artiste shows, Tivoli Boys Guard and international stars.

The weather: Denmark is known wordwide for its unpredictable weather. The temperatures vary considerably during the year, particularly during the winter period. July is normally the warmest month with an average temperature of just below 20°C. February is generally the coldest with an average of just below 0°C, and it often snows during wintertime.

Danish designs: Industrial design, furniture and artfully created objects have always been one of Denmark's biggest exports. The works of Børge Mogensen, Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Poul Henningsen and Verner Panton are known throughout the world.

6 Welfare system: The basic principle of the Danish welfare system, often referred to as the Scandinavian welfare model, is that all citizens have equal rights to social security. Within the Danish welfare system, a number of services are available to citizens, free of charge. This means that for instance the Danish health and educational systems are free. The Danish welfare model is subsidised by the state, and as a result Denmark has one of the highest taxation levels in the world.

The Danes: Although you may get the impression in your business dealings that Danes appear to be unfriendly and uncaring, in fact we can be a very warm people, who enjoy long conversations and being with friends. The Danes tend to be quite informal, which gives us a relaxed and often humorous attitude to authorities and life itself.

8 The royal family: Having existed for more than 1000 years, the Danish Monarchy is one of the oldest in the world. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik reside at various royal palaces. In the winter, the Royal Couple reside at Amalienborg, whereas their residence in spring and autumn is Fredensborg Palace.

9 The vikings: Viking is a term used to refer to the nordic-speaking peoples from southern Scandinavia who raided, traded and settled in Europe and the British Isles roughly between the years 793-1066. They would have identified themselves as Danes, Svear, Goths, Norwegians, etc. As such, the Scandinavian kingdoms rose during the Viking Age.

10

Karen Blixen: Danish writer born in 1885. She wrote several books, poems and short stories; some of them under the pseudonyms Isak Dinesen, Pierre Andrézel, Tania Blixen and Osceola. In 1914 she married her cousin Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, and went with him to Kenya, where they directed coffee plantation. She died peacefully in Denmark on September 7th 1962.
