New ORS formulation
A new and improved Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) formulation has been developed with reduced osmolarity to avoid possible adverse effects of hypertonicity on net fluid absorption. This is achieved by reducing the concentration of Glucose and Sodium Chloride in the formulation.
The advantages of the new reduced osmolarity ORS solution compared to the original formulation have proved to be:
- A reduction in vomiting by almost 30%.
- A reduced stool output or stool volume by about 25%.
- A reduced need for IV therapy by more than 30%.
The reduced osmolarity formulation contains:
-
Glucose, anhydrous 13,5g
-
Sodium Chloride 2,6g
-
Sodium Citrate 2,9g
-
Potassium Choride 1,5g
As the reduced osmolarity formulation has shown effective especially for children with acute, non-cholera diarrhoea, WHO and UNICEF now recommend that countries use and manufacture the new formulation instead of the previously recommended ORS solution.
